Preview: THE PIGEON PACK and COLLECTIVE SCREAM BRING PUNK ISLAND BENEFIT SHOW to TV EYE
Brooklyn-based music collective The Pigeon Pack teams up with TTM’s favorite benefit concert series, Collective Scream, for a collab show at TV Eye in Ridgewood on April 19th, featuring sets from Cat Crash, Train Traffic, Speakeasy, and Bad Static.
Vendors will be on site, and there’s a raffle with prizes such as clothing/music/accessories. Sponsors for those include Other People’s Clothes, Body Vanity, Doll Herbalism, Decades Pizza, and more.
All proceeds raised from ticket sales (including raffle tickets) will benefit PUNK ISLAND, NYC’s annual free, all-ages, DIY punk festival, taking place Saturday, June 27 on Randall’s Island. Attendees are also encouraged to bring pasta, rice, lentils, or other shelf-stable goods for a food drive collection for Club A, a mutual aid collective that distributes food weekly in Bushwick.
Ahead of the show, we asked band members and Pigeon Pack crew about what drew them to play/support the festival, to reflect on the current NYC scene as a whole, and shout out some other local acts you should check out.
Hint: you can find those bands on our brand new Collective Scream playlist featuring artist recommendations here!
CAT CRASH, led by singer and bassist Cecil Yang, are an indie punk rock riot grrrl group from Connecticut, whose DIY ethos and dire messages of queer and trans liberation, has been rippin’ sets and saving lives. As Cecil puts it,
“Music can save lives, I really do believe this to be true. I’ve had people come up to me at shows telling me I gave them the courage to live their truth as a trans person or helped them through the darkest times of their lives.”
Make sure to keep an eye out for Cat Crash’s next single, "You Lie To Yr Therapist," a collaboration with their former drummer and current producer Briar Patch. If you like what you hear at TV EYE on 4/19, head to Purgatory the day after for the matinee single release show, with an all-AAPI lineup to celebrate AAPI month.
SPEAKEASY will cross the Hudson from New Jersey and bring their soulful jazzy punk to Queens. The band has been making waves, playing shows throughout the east coast this spring and summer, and supporting their community in New Brunswick, New Jersey, as a part of the Rutgers Palestine Encampment, and Rutgers Strikestock in support of the Unions at Rutgers. Check out the NPR Tiny Desk submission they made for the must-listen “Panic!” below.
“ When the world around us is trying their hardest to normalize brutality and injustice, it’s up to individuals to stand together and make a difference. By inspiring others, and sharing our messages, we can keep beauty alive in the heart of the empire, and keep focusing on the values we love.”
All-women grungy punk band BAD STATIC will keep the riotgrrrl energy pumping at TV EYE on 4/19. Their dynamic shows have been putting them on the map over the past few years in NYC, where you can step into dozens of sub-worlds; Nico, lead singer in Bad Static said it best;
“I love how many pockets there are in NYC. You can never get bored of the music scene because there are, like, hundreds of bands you’ve never even heard before.”
Their debut full-length, “Miss Dirty Fingers” is a rippin’, riffy 10-track journey that they’re bringing to new cities on their “Let’s Ruin Your Hometown” Tour!
TRAIN TRAFFIC, whose self-titled debut album came out last year, are set to take the stage at TV EYE. The punk quartet has been playing shows throughout NYC since early 2020 after their self-titled cassette came out. High-energy, raw, in-your-face punk.
It’s now more important than ever to have safe spaces for people from all walks of life to enjoy music, free expression and camaraderie. Debbie from Pigeon Pack kept it plain and simple when asked about supporting Punk Island;
“Many of us feel it’s such a community oriented space. Once you attend or are involved in any way, you feel a sense of belonging, not only as an attendee but as a performer as well. Punk Island helps keep music accessible and it’s important to protect those spaces.”
